Victoria Jubilee Hall

Built in 1897 in commemoration of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, this iconic building in downtown Walkerton has eight different levels and contains an impressive 300-seat theatre. Located at 111 Jackson Street, the hall now houses various offices with public space available for community events.

Over the years Victoria Jubilee Hall has been used for many purposes including a market place, fire hall, police station, municipal offices, council chambers, and the public utilities commission. Saved from the wrecking ball by a group of dedicated volunteers, the hall now boasts thousands of visitors every year who pass through the doors to attend meetings, conferences, courses, dance classes, music recitals and other performances.

The hall’s presence in town can be heard daily with the tower clock chiming every 30 minutes during daylight hours.

Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival

The Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival in Walkerton announces the arrival of spring each April/May with a rich array of musical talent in piano, strings, brass, voice, and dance. There are classes for all ages, whether amateur or professional, and the festival gives participants the opportunity to perform to appreciative audiences.

Walkerton Library Juried Art Show

This juried exhibition at the Walkerton Public Library is held every spring and gives local artists the opportunity to show their work and compete for prizes. Open to residents of Brockton, South Bruce, West Grey, Hanover and Arran-Elderslie, the juried show features original works available for sale. The show is displayed annually from mid to late April until early May.

Heritage Walking Tour

Brockton is home to many heritage sites including private residences, public and commercial buildings, places of worship, mills, cemeteries, schoolhouses and more. Those interested in taking a self-guided walking or driving tour of the area’s historical sites can pick up maps of the Brockton Heritage Committee’s walking and driving tours at the Visitor Information Centre, located at 101 Durham Street in Walkerton. Among numerous buildings on the tours are a Victorian mansion built in 1880 by Alexander Shaw, and Cargill’s ‘White House’, constructed in 1900 by village founder Henry Cargill.

Doors Open Walkerton & Area

Tour some of the area’s unique homes and sites of historical and architectural interest during the bi-annual Doors Open event, held every second year on the fourth Saturday in September. Pick up a brochure in advance, or view it on-line, and take a free, self-guided tour through the featured sites.

History/Genealogy

The Walkerton Archives Room at the Walkerton Public Library is a local historical collection containing many different types of materials including books, microfilm, papers and pictures. As well, the Saugeen Heritage Group and the Bruce County Genealogical Society assist people who are researching family histories and similar genealogical work.
